We are told that when Musa (Moses), may God's peace be upon him, went up Mount Sinai, he was told to take off his sandals before entering sacred grounds. For many Muslims, that story has been symbolic of the need to leave behind our anger, our selfishness, our own internal ego-self, before entering homes, before praying in mosques, and before entering gatherings in which God's name is brought up. We invite all of us attending this community meeting to leave our nafs (ego-self), our confrontational natures which make it hard to hear one another, before coming together in a spirit of affection, respect, and engagement.
