Structure, Transparency and Values

PMU is committed to transparency in all aspects of its work.

PMU is an organization with an agenda and a mission. We do not claim to represent everyone—only those who agree with our statement of principles. PMU does not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, or intolerance of an individual's religious convictions or lack of conviction. Beyond these "red lines," PMU does not impose political or social litmus tests on its members or affiliates, and considers personal lives personal.

Pending adoption of the group's bylaws, PMU affairs are overseen by its Executive Board. We are currently in the process of assembling our Board of Advisors and Board of Directors, which we expect to announce on our official public launch of November 15, 2004.

The Executive Board, from time to time, will invite individuals to serve on the Advisory Board based on the following criteria:

1. The individual has a proven record of service to the Muslim community, be it social, political or intellectual
2. The individual is committed to a tolerant and enlightened understanding of Islam
3. The individual is respectful of views that are not necessarily their own and is willing and able to listen to the experiences and perspectives of others
4. The individual understands and agrees with PMU's Statement of Principles

In addition, service on the Board of Directors is based on the following criteria:

1. The individual has demonstrated their capacity to be disciplined and hard working
2. The individual is prepared to take on legal and financial responsibility for PMU
3. The individual is able to bring fresh ideas and strategic thinking to PMU's work
4. The individual has experience working with groups or within an organization
5. The individual is able, willing, and able to commit to the time demands placed on a PMU board member
